Adam Kleman, Visiting Lecturer in Chemistry, created 10 pre-lab video lectures for the laboratory component of General Chemistry I (CHM 103). The videos replaced the typical pre-lab lecture usually given in person with a chalkboard. The videos provide detailed, close-up demonstrations of equipment and techniques that aren’t always possible in person. The videos are licensed under a Creative Commons BY-NC-SA 4.0 and are freely available on YouTube. These videos include captions and go beyond a simple recording of someone speaking in front of a chalkboard or over slides. Creative editing and varied camera angles are used to retain engagement and cut out the fluff that is unavoidable in person (erasing a board, looking through notes, filler words, etc.).
Due to increased enrollment in Chemistry classes, students have reduced time in the labs and some asynchronous activity walking through each experiment is necessary so that students can make the most of their time in class. The videos contain the same information as the former in-person lectures but with full demonstrations in a close-up, engaging format. Students can view the videos multiple times and at their own pace. Additionally, since these videos are used by all the lab instructors of this course, students will receive a more consistent experience regardless of instructor. The videos also allow students to pause or rewatch the material, and access subtitles and transcripts.
This flipped classroom model has allowed Professor Kleman to spend more class time focusing on helping students one-on-one as the more general info delivery is done before class. Students get more time hands-on with equipment and experimental work.
Adam received a Connecticut College OER Grant for his work. Stay tuned for a Call for Proposals in May 2024 for our next round of grant awards.
