As a librarian, I encourage faculty to consider publishing in reputable open access journals because I understand that open access is the long term answer to our current serials crisis. Working at an institution with an open access policy, I am even more dedicated to encouraging open access publishing. NPR’s story this morning on “bad” open access journals was an important reminder that faculty should research potential journals and select the most relevant and highest quality journals. This may be an open access journal, but if not faculty should negotiate with the publisher to retain certain rights to their work, including the right to disseminate their own research to their students through our institutional repository.
