You may already know that Kaltura Video Resources can be added to your Moodle page to share videos that you have created and uploaded yourself or are available through the library’s Shared Repository. But did you know that you can also use Kaltura to share Youtube content?
Most commonly, Youtube content is shared in a Moodle site by simply adding the direct Youtube link as a URL activity. While this method serves its purpose, it directs students to a YouTube page teeming with visual clutter in the form of advertisements and other unrelated video links.
Kaltura, however, provides another way of sharing that same content, but without all the distractions that are all over a typical Youtube page. Sharing the video using the Kaltura Video Resource activity results in the video displaying on a clean Moodle page, free of advertisements or links to other videos. The introductory ads that commonly precede Youtube videos are skipped when viewed through Kaltura, allowing your students to get directly to the content.
To add a Youtube video to your Moodle page using the Kaltura Video Resource activity, start by following the same steps that you normally would when adding a Kaltura video. When you click the “Add New” button at the point where you would otherwise upload your own video, choose the “YouTube” option instead. You will be prompted to paste the URL of the Youtube page containing the video you would like to share. After saving that URL, the video will be added to your course Moodle page, and will be added to your Kaltura My Media Library, facilitating easy sharing across multiple course Moodle pages.
