Information Services provides access to Pressbooks an ebook authoring tool used to write and publish openly licensed material. With Pressbooks, you can:
- Create textbooks, course modules and digital scholarship projects
- Apply an open license to your published work
- Export books in multiple digital and print formats
Pressbooks is a platform used to create, customize and host your original content, such as an open educational resource or a digital scholarship project. It can also be used as a teaching tool to engage students and create real-world assignments that can be shared with the public.
The newly published Connecticut College Pressbooks Creator Guide covers the basics of setting up and editing a Pressbook to advanced topics such as creating open books with students. The guide includes practical tips on how to choose an open license and fairly represent student contributions in the finished product.
Faculty can use Pressbooks in open pedagogy projects as the foundation for fostering student agency and engagement. Open pedagogy is a student-centered teaching approach that empowers students as creators of knowledge and open course materials. An easy way to engage students in open pedagogy is to move from disposable assignments to renewable assignments that go beyond the limited course time and space. A Pressbook created in the fall semester can be built upon, edited and enhanced in the following spring semester. The platform offers an exciting opportunity for innovation in the classroom.
